MY JOURNEY AT KINDRED STUDIOS

MY FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE

My first year at Victoria University was my favourite year to be studying the Bachelor of Music. Everyone was really nice and it was easy to make friends straight away. Everyone was really talented, and this really intimidated me in the beginning. I was not the best singer when I performed, because I got bad stage anxiety. To this day, I still suffer from this. You can hear it in my vocals in the first year videos - I was at times pitchy, not phrasing well, and my breathing was not controlled. While my performing wasn’t my strong suit, I did well writing original songs, and my strengths lied with the technology and theory classes.

MY SECOND YEAR EXPERIENCE

My second year was done online, in my bedroom, due to the pandemic. Melbourne was the worst hit city in Australia because of the coronavirus, so we could not perform live or go to University in person. A huge part of second year for me was to try and improve my stage anxiety and get better at performing in front of people. I also planned to do gigs, but we had to record all our work remotely. While I love recording and composing music, second year was the hardest year when it came to my mental wellbeing and my motivation for music crumbled. A big part about this course is the social aspect and coming together at the end of each block to watch everyone perform in their ensembles, but it was very different. Instead, we watched a YouTube live of everyone’s recorded work.

MY THIRD YEAR EXPERIENCE

My third year was completed both in person and online. This had some benefits because I was able to work on improving my performance skills majorly. Looking at my singing from this year and comparing it to how I sounded in second and first year, I have a much better voice. I am more in tune, my phrasing is more accurate, my breathing is more controlled, and my stage presence as a whole is generally better. I could only perform live three times this year, but I’m glad I had the chance to show everyone how much I’ve improved since starting in 2019. Overall, my time at University has taught me that I can’t compare myself to others in the music world. Everyone has their own strengths and weakness’s, my strengths don’t necessarily lie with performing, but they lie with just about everything else. While someone might be better at performing live than me, no one can write a song like me. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come.
